FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

Philosophy: The primary objectives of the Foreign Language Department are to achieve acceptable levels of communicative skills in the target language, and to achieve a cultural awareness of the native speakers of the language. The faculty is committed to using all available technology to enhance achievement such as a state of the art computer language laboratory, all forms of media, and Internet resources to help meet these goals by introducing and developing language within an authentic cultural context. (Lab Fee) Spanish I Grade 9 The course objectives are to further develop the ability to understand and communicate in the target language within a cultural framework. The basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are studied within a limited vocabulary. A deeper understanding of the cultural morays of Spanish speaking countries is presented. Students have the option of enrolling in the Project Acceleration Program at Seton Hall to receive 6 intermediate level college credits for their work in Spanish IV. Students may also register to take the Advanced Placement exam. Spanish I for Native Speakers Grade 9 In this course the students will perfect the basic skills of phonetics, orthography and syllabication while awakening their love for the culture and language of their heritage. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills will be developed using more advanced vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Text: Tu Mundo, Samaniego (DC Heath) Spanish II for Native Speakers Grade 10 The student will acquire increased skill and precision in the use of knowledge gained in level one. More sophisticated readings will help continue perfection of written and oral expression skills. It broadens the learner's knowledge of significant elements of the Hispanic world and culture. This course includes skill development from authentic popular Hispanic publications, which present a range of styles.
