KAPLAN SAT TEST PREP
Kaplan Information During the months of February, March, April, and May Kaplan Review will be offering an intensive SAT Prep Review at QPHS. The Kaplan course for the spring (scheduled around the May 5, 2012 SAT’s) will begin Monday, February 27th. This is a course that requires a great deal of time and dedication. We are looking for students who are serious about improving their SAT scores.

The number of students we are allowing for the class is 25. Anyone planning to take the course must make a commitment of time and payment before they are enrolled in the course. There is a $480.00 fee for the course, which is less than half of the regular Kaplan fee.

. The commitment is considerable. You will be in class once or twice a week for three to four hours. You will be required to do homework outside of class. It is a documented fact that students who attend each class and complete the homework assignments improve their scores on an average of 150 points. Class Attendance is mandatory.

While the commitment is considerable there are benefits which can be attained (the Essay part of the test is also reviewed along with the additional Writing Score). In order to secure a place in the class, a non-refundable deposit of $280.00 is required by Friday, January 20th. Please make the check payable to: Queen of Peace High School. Submit the check as soon as possible to Mr. McGinnis or Mrs. Valente in the Counseling Center. The spaces will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

  PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND STUDENT SUCCESS
  • When parents are involved, students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents' education level.
  • The more extensive the parent involvement, the higher the student achievement.
  • When parents are involved in their son/daughter's education, those students have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and complete homework more consistently.
  • Students whose parents are involved in their lives have higher graduation rates and greater enrollment rates in post-secondary education.

ATHLETES AND THE NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE
(2008 and Later)

NCAA There has been a great deal of questions, concern and confusion by student-athletes and parents about "being cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse". There have been recent changes in the computation of Requirements by the Clearinghouse Board, which has made certification for eligibility of student-athletes to participate in a particular sport(s) more difficult. Senior Athletes should follow the following points; however, Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Athletes should be made aware of these for future reference:

  1. Apply for certification before graduation, if you are sure you wish to participate in athletics as a freshman at the college to which you wish to apply. (They will be reviewed again upon graduation. You must satisfy high school graduation requirements.)
  2. For a Division I school (2008 and Later), earn a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and a minimum combined SAT score of 1010 Critical Reading and Math. The grade point average is based on the 16 core courses in a curriculum (ex. English, Math, Science, Social Studies) from freshman year through senior year. There is a sliding scale used on the SAT if your GPA is low. For example, a GPA of 2.40, a required SAT score of 860 would be necessary.
  3. For a Division II school (2005 and Later), a requirement of a 2.0 GPA, a combined SAT score of 820, and the successful completion of the 14 academic units (same as above). There is NO sliding scale.
  4. For a Division III school, no specific requirements.
If you have any questions, please see your counselor, attend the Parent Guidance Night, or go to www.ncaaclearinghouse.net or www.ncaa.org.
