Queen of Peace High School

Congratulations to Junior Isabella Mansilla who has recently been named to represent The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children and Queen of Peace High School in the Summer Space Camp Program at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama from June 20 through June 25, 2010.

Isabella is entering her junior year at QPHS and has taken accelerated biology. She plans to pursue post-secondary studies in anatomy and physiology with the hope to one day complete studies in the medical field.

Isabella will attend the Advanced Space Academy on a scholarship which was made available to six students from the Archdiocese of Newark through the generosity of Mark Walchak who has provided financial support to high school students with an interest in science for the past 14 years.  The scholarship will cover tuition, registration, camp clothing, and transportation to and from Huntsville, Alabama.

Advanced Space Academy
The Advanced Space Academy program is a college-accredited program through the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UAH). All Advanced Space Academy participants will earn one hour of Freshman-level general science credit from UAH. During this weeklong program, trainees get hands-on training, as well as learn about the mental, emotional and physical demands astronauts must face. Fields of study include Engineering, Space Technology and Aerospace Science. Isabella will select from two different programs or tracts:

Pilot Track
Pilot Track Trainees will take command of an orbiter on its mission to the International Space Station. A pilot will follow the checklist procedures of a mission and be required to make emergency decisions while monitoring and commanding the crew.
Pilot Track Shuttle Pilots need flight time on simulators and team up with the other pilots to test their navigation skills.

  • Pilot Track campers are responsible for the safety of their crew in space.
  • On the Shuttle, they complete their checklists all while monitoring the activities of the crew.
  • On our newly expanded Space Station simulator, they keep the crew and the Space Station on track while conducting their own experiments.

Mission Specialist Track
Mission Specialist Track Trainees will be instructed in the engineering and design of the shuttle and space station. Repairs to either will be conducted in the UAT SCUBA Tank creating an accurate environment for the space walk.

  • Mission Specialists learn about the engineering of the Shuttle and Space Station, just in case something needs a quick repair.
  • They learn aeronautical engineering basics to get started.
  • They take a spin in the Underwater Astronaut Trainer to get the feel for spacewalking.
  • During missions, they participate in Space Station science and make any needed repairs to the space vehicle or satellites on an EVA.
  • In Mission Control, they help the back-room Tiger Team recreate anomalies.
