11 Wrestlers Advance to Region Tournament

On February 17-18, 2017, the Queen of Peace High School wrestling team competed in the District Championships, a three-round tournament as part of the Individual State Wrestling Championships.  After two days of competition held in Morristown, the QPHS wrestling team earned both team and individual distinctions.

Out of 10 teams competing in District 11, Queen of Peace came away with the district title, finishing with 228.5 team points, ahead of Hanover Park, which was recently ranked as the No. 10 wrestling team in the state.  In fact, Queen of Peace won all four of its head-to-head matches against Hanover Park in the finals.

In addition, 11 QPHS wrestlers earned spots in the Region tournament.  Six of those 11 wrestlers were individual District Champions in their respective weight classes, including: Enrique Sanchez; Matt Armamento; Ray Wetzel; Garret Beam; Dominic Mainiero; and Keyon Means-Bowman.  Also advancing to the Region tournament with 2nd or 3rd place finishes were: Will Grater; Jean Carlo San Juan; Michael Pillot; Jacob Cardenas; and Jason Kopach.

“Our wrestlers faced some of the best wrestlers in North Jersey, if not the entire state, and met the challenge,” said Scot Weaver, coach of QPHS wrestling.  “To win the district title as a team and have so many of our wrestlers advance to the Regions is incredibly rewarding.  But our work is not over; we will continue to work as hard as ever, for the Regions, and ultimately the State Championships.”

District 11 featured wrestlers from: Hanover Park; West Morris Central; Belvidere; Morristown; Belleville; Rutherford; Kearny; Queen of Peace; Morris Catholic; and East Orange Campus.

Queen of Peace will travel to West Orange for the Region tournament on February 22, 24, and 25.  The top four finishers in each weight class, in each region, will advance to the championship tournament in Atlantic City on March 3-5.
